So you want to complain about bloggers

I've compiled a few blogger complaints about blogging I've seen on twitter that I just don't understand. Do you??

1. Leaving your blog link in your signature.

WHY do some bloggers have a problem with this?? I understand when people comment solely with ‘hey I’m having a giveaway!!!’ or ‘FOLLOW ME & I’LL FOLLOW YOU!’ that it’s annoying and disrespectful in a way. My blog isn’t yours to promote yourself. But why is it not okay to leave your blog link at the end of your comment? What if I want to come find your blog? What if I find your comment is funny and want to see what you’re all about? Can we all not share readers?

2. Pinterest.

Some bloggers complain that some posts are only a rehash of Pinterest. I mean as long as it’s credited to the right source, why do you care what someone else’s blog posts are? We’re never going to go through every single photo on Pinterest. Sometimes it’s awesome to see ideas bloggers like!

3. Some bloggers don’t portray their “real life.”

Not everyone is comfortable sharing their relationship or family problems on the Internet. And yeah, everyone fights but SOME relationships just don’t have a lot of drama. My boyfriend and I argue. We’ve been in fights. But honestly, we don’t fight a whole lot and when we do it's generally civil. It’s normal for us to not have a lot of drama. Sure, our relationship isn’t perfect all the time but you won’t see me blogging about how annoyed I was when xyz happened. Why is not posting about this mean what I post isn’t my “real life”? Some of my favorite blogs seem like a dream world. They are SO lucky! Does that mean I don’t think they have issues sometimes? Nope. Does that mean I think their entire life is just traveling and being happy? Nope. Just because you don’t see it on their blog doesn’t mean you get to be jealous and complain.

4. I had a great post today, so many page views, and NO comments.

Cry me a river. Page views can tell you a lot more than comments. Some of my favorite posts I’ve written have had just a few comments. Some of my less favorite posts have 20+. Not everyone is going to comment. That doesn’t mean you don’t have readers. And no one likes a complainer. People like honesty, they just don’t like complaining about petty things. Blog for yourself and hopefully the rest comes with it!

Do you have some insight on this that I'm not seeing?

  1. Here's my insight on number three: I don't think I've complained about people not writing real things. I understand if a blog is about fashion then fights with your boyfriend or your mom or whatever aren't really right for your blog. I also know that I don't want to talk bad about people in my life on my blog, so I'm not necessarily going to write about fights with my boyfriend or friends. However, I have commented (today in fact) that I admire when people post about real life struggles. If it's suitable for your blog and you feel comfortable posting it, I think it's great. What I don't like is when people might intentionally hide their unhappiness or struggles and put on a fake face. If you're moving to Maine and you aren't happy about it, don't act like you are, you know?

That's just my two cents. :)

    1. I love your two cents!! I agree with you that there is a difference about being fake. But I guess you'd only truly know if someone was fake if you knew them personally or you noticed their tweets didn't match up to their posts. I definitely don't think being fake is the answer for anyone as it just masks other problems. You have a great point though!

  2. Loved this post & I agree with you on all these aspects! It annoys me when I see people complaining over twitter about something another blogger did or didn't do! Come on people it's called social networking for a reason!

As for bloggers not portraying their real life, I think that is childish for someone to say! Not everyone wants their entire life out there so everyone can see it and they definitely don't want their problems to be either especially when their personal. I can relate to this one in so many ways, and me and my boyfriend are the same as you and yours, we don't hardly fight but when we do it's piddily and isn't something the whole world should see when it's already blown over.

    Happy Tuesday girl!

  3. I really like the above two comments! And I loved this post. I think people should be able to write about whatever the heck they want! And if you don't want to read about it, then don't :)

  4. haha! Love it! I was just laughing because yesterday because I had a post that got like triple my normal page views in the first hour and only has 1 comment and then one post that only has about half my normal views but with 4 comments. Definitely agree with #4. Besides, blogging shouldn't be about fishing for comments! In fact, I'm a believer in if you're going to complain about someone else's blog then don't read it and if you're going to complain about your own blog then don't write it.

    Blogging should be fun :D

  5. I have seen these and so many more on twitter. It's as if twitter is open season to whine about people. I for one enjoy sitting in my house, laughing or giggling over how someone else's blog can ruin someone else's day. Why take *their* space into *your* heart like that.

I have probably heard the "be real" one the most. I am very open on my blog, because it's my little internet diary that anyone can pick the lock on and read. As real as I am I definitely don't post every little hiccup- it's called dirty laundry, and you're not supposed to air it in public.

With all of these things: if you don't like it, there's a little red X you can push and close out of that page and be done with it. Blogging brings out the childishness in folks, just like Breanna said!

    1. It so does and it is quite ridiculous :)
      & I totally agree!
There is plenty of ways to keep from viewing someones page, don't like their content, don't read! Plain and Simple!

  6. I think that as long as you are posting what you truly want to be posting, there should be no other rules! Other bloggers should respect your content and leave it be. I hate when blogs come across as fake or forced, but other than that I'm open-minded to anything another blogger decides to post.

  7. Great post! I'm upfront about that fact that I do *complain* through sarcasm and irony on my blog, but that's just because I see the irony in life. Do my husband and I disagree? All the time (it's called "marriage"). Do I write about it? Never. I don't want my pettiness immortalized on the internet! Oh, and I read a lot more blogs than I comment on everyday. If I don't have something other to say than "Great post xoxo", I don't write it. I like getting substantial comments, so I try to leave comments with substance.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Amen! I definitely agree with all of these! In regards to #3 in particular, my bf reads my blog. So if I posted about a fight or argument, I would just have to hear about it all over again when he read it! Sometimes I post about friend issues, but usually it's asking for advice (like my post today). And for #4, I stay true to the saying "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." Everyone is not going to agree with everything you say 100% of the time, and that's ok!

    ReplyDelete
  9. I agree with all of these! I do hate when people accuse people of not being real on their blog...bloggers already share a TON on their blogs so it just makes me think the accusers are nosy haha. And I agree about comments! People seem to be so caught up with comments and followers, the way I see it is if I get one comment or email about how my post has affected someone positively, my work is done! great post hollie :-)

    ReplyDelete
  10. this post is SO REFRESHING, Hollie! seriously. who the heck cares WHAT someone posts on THEIR own PERSONAL blog?! ugh, and honestly, the LAST thing i want to do is read about your petty fight, or that one time it got so bad you punched boyfriend in the face, etc. i didnt come into the blogging world searching or even WANTING negativity.. it's always been about positivity, little moments, pretty pictures, and creating a space that when i look back on, will be a lovely reminder of my life- whatever that entails. so i DONT need to be reminded of anything negative, either- who gives a shit, really? am i really going to remember that little fight (or do i even WANT to) versus the pretty flowers that came home with hubby AFTER the fight?

    no.

i want to remember the flowers.

and i just assume universalizability- that all other bloggers (or at least the cool ones) feel this same way...

    great post holls!

    ReplyDelete
  11. oh my gosh I TOTALLY agree with these, esp #1. People need ot relax and not take themselves so darn seriously.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I completely agree with all of the above. Especially the one about not writing about the bad things in life. I do have a great life. And a pretty drama free one at that. But that doesn't mean it's perfect. But I will not go around writing bad things about the people in my life just to entertain readers that I don't know ha! That's just silly. If something megative happens but it may be inspiring to others that's another story.

After all, my blog is called "The Good Life." It wouldn't make much sense to complain everyday just so readers don't think I'm fake.

And about the comments thing, I am with the comment above. I may read a blog everyday, but unless I have substantial comment to make I just don't comment. That doesn't mean I didn't love it.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Great post! I agree with all of it! Thank you so much for sharing it!

    ReplyDelete
  14. I haven't really seen people complain about bloggers being "unreal." There's things that I don't blog about, because it is way too personal. Once it is blogged, it is out there forever. I don't blog about politics, religion, money issues, sex, or anything else that is relatively personal that I wouldn't want to share with thousands and thousands of people (followers and whoever comes across the site).

I'm guilty of #4. I don't usually blast it on social media. It is just really discouraging when you spend hours on a post and receive 2 comments, especially when you have 500+ followers. It makes me not want to blog at all. Then I realize, I started blogging waaaaayyyyy before comments and I continued blogging anyway. I just have to keep reminding myself that this blog is for me and to document my life. Every blog has their reasons and motives for blogging.

    ReplyDelete
  15. SERIOUSLY!!! I LOVE this post a million times over. It seems that people need to lighten up. It's your blog after all. Do what you want. I also cannot stand when I get comments from people just trying to gain more followers. Chances are, I won't follow a blog that ASKS me to. I follow ONLY blogs that I read on a regular basis!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Really? Perhaps I am not on twitter enough, but I am totally oblivious to these complaints! Ha, ignorance is happiness.

I have never complained on my blog or twitter about it, but number 4 has come up with me quite often.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Great Great Post. You said EXACTLY what my thoughts are on all of the above. What someone chooses to share or not share doesn't make someone fake! I think that it's so important to remember, as with ANY social media, that this is a Virtual, one dimensional representation of life- it's not Real, period! "Real" is face to face. Face to face is 3 dimensional and soo different than any one dimensional picture or text in black and white or red and blue can convey.

and ps.. I wish ALL bloggers would leave a blog link with their comment! I often read a comment and love the person's perspective and would like to read more of what they have to say and a link makes it soo much easier than having to click click click to sometimes land on their page and sometimes not.

  18. Oh, to add to that number 4. I have often felt, never aired, except here, that I sometimes spend hours commenting on other people's blogs, because I, quite frankly, like giving my two cents. haha

And as soon as I have a comment on my blog, whether from a follower, or new person, I do my utmost best to get hack to their blog and leave a comment. It's a nice way of saying thanks, isn't it? People like getting comments.

It just feels like I don't get any thanks for all my hard work, not even a thanks for stopping by in my email. Am I wrong?

  19. I love this post. I don't get all this blogger whining, period. If I can be frank, I've gotten a little bummed out lately by the number of "I hate when people do this on blogs" or just "I hate this about life" type posts. There is not enough positivity in this world and bloggers whining about the stuff listed above becomes a pet peeve of mine, too. (But I don't whine about whiners in social media or on my blog! I just stop reading the offending blog. See that there? Common sense!)

I think you're right on all accounts and it's sad that people feel the need to complain about these things - for 2 and 3 they can just stop reading the blogs if they don't like it. I agree with you on #1 - I like being able to easily find someone's blog rather than having to go to their blogger profile and navigate from there. And #4 is just #firstworldproblems and not even worth a mention. We should blog because we love it and we want to and it means something to US, not just to get comments.

    Guess what??

    1. I'm bummed about your bummin about my being bummed about bloggers bummin on twitter about other bloggers post!! ;)

No, thank you for being frank. I wanted to hear honest answers about this, because I'm not perfect. At the end of the day, if someone's blog bothers you...don't read it!

Thanks for the blog link by the way!

  20. i'm a very private person. I dont ALWAYS share my personal life on the internet because i don't know what creepy person is reading it. (not that my followers are creepy lol). But you never know.

When I told my husband about the blog, we both agreed that SOME things are meant to stay between him and I not shared to the world. There has to be boundaries.

  21. Last time I checked, blogging was a voluntary activity you do because you enjoy it. No one is making you read blogs or even write one. I actually get irrationally angry when someone DOESN'T leave me a link to their blog and there's no way to respond to their comment. If you say something totally awesome, I want to get to know you and respond. I love Pinterest posts and sometimes my blog doesn't portray my real life. Sometimes the heels I wear hurt my feet so I don't wear them the whole day, but I rock them in an outfit post. Sometimes I look like I got run over by a train, but I don't put up an outfit photo that day.
    I loved this post!

  26. I really love the points in this post (and your honesty)! A lot of time that bloggers spend complaining about other bloggers is better spent doing anything else. Anything. Haha.

The only thing that I would say is that while it's great that you've sourced the image you used in this post (not enough people do this, at all), you've linked to a "thinspo" blog. I doubt that it's the original source of that particular image anyway, but in general those blogs are really awful and promote super dangerous habits. I don't mean to clutch my pearls or anything, I just worry that young girls read and internalize the stuff on those blogs and end up doing damage to their bodies. I don't complain about other peoples' blogs *except* when it comes to "thinspo".

Anyway, like I said, awesome post! :)

    1. Good point! I actually snagged that from Pinterest (seemed appropriate to #2) and clicked the site real quick to make sure it wasn't spam/the image was there and sited. The "thinspiration" is another topic I both and agree and disagree with. Being thin isn't a bad thing, but thinking you HAVE to be that is. I also don't condone bad habits to be thin. Thanks for the input and bringing this to my attention.

  27. Not having people comment on my posts used to bother me, but I've since learned that it's more about the page views. And that alone tells me people are reading :) I've also noticed that my comments go up when I'm out commenting on other blogs (win-win!).

    Love this post! :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Interesting points. I don't mind people's links in their signatures... that's what signatures are for, right? Lol. I hate when comments only say something spammy like, "Follow me and I'll follow you!" Like... really, people? But a simple link in their signature is smart, if you ask me. Makes it super easy for people to find their blog!

The only time I have problems with Pinterest posts is when that seems to be all a blogger ever blogs about. I enjoy me a good Pinterest post as much as the next girl, but some bloggers can't seem to do anything but post pictures... Then again... it's their blog, so maybe they're entitled to do that.

It does seem like some bloggers have a perfect life, although I suppose that's better than bloggers who do nothing but complain. Lol. I feel like as long as people are being their honest selves, even if they don't share every bit of drama in their life, their posts will come across as being "real", and that's okay by me.

As for the no comments thing. I know how easy it is to feel neglected because no one is saying anything about a post, especially one that you slaved over. On the other hand... sometimes it's hard to tell what will resonate with people. My most popular post is a random post that I did about 80's cartoons. None of the rest of my blog has anything to do with that, but that post still gets the most views even though it was months ago. Go figure... People will comment when they feel moved, but even if they don't, bloggers need to realize that that doesn't mean their writing is crap. It MIGHT mean their writing is crap, but not necessarily. Lol.

  33. Totally agree with you on all of these points. What does annoy me is when bloggers leave comment - not about your post, but about what they are promoting. It's one thing as part of a signature, or if you know them and they comment regularly, but out of the blue is dumb (to me) lol.

  36. This is so funny :) people love to complain, and I think it's even worse now that they have social media to broadcast their complaints on!

    ReplyDelete
  37. i hear you! especially # 1. i'm totally appalled by some bloggers who make a big deal out of a simple blog link. it's not a crime. they simply want you to take notice and maybe visit their blog the same way they visited yours.

as for me, i don't really take huge offense at bloggers for leaving a "can you follow me?" or a "i'm running a giveaway" comment. it's all cool with me. it saddens me when i sometimes read really mean responses from bloggers who would take the extra mile to embarass "these commenters" through a lengthy reply, a harsh tweet and even a blog post for everyone to see and make fun of. it's childish and also not very nice.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Great post! Bottom line women are drama! Haha Seriously gotta agree with some of the other comments. Who cares what other people post on their blog! It is THEIR blog! No one is forced to follow them or look at it!

  40. Girl I am FIST PUMPING right here!I don't do a whole lot with twitter, so I haven't seen all these complaints on there, however I HAVE read them in blog posts.

I love when people leave their blog link in the comments! I don't love when they beg me to follow them, but it makes it so much easier to hunt down their blog, ya know?

People complaining about not getting comments?!?! I'm sorry but that DISGUSTS me! That is NOT what blogging should be about! I mean, we all love comments and there is nothing wrong in wanting them, but we should really be writing for ourselves and not just for readers & attention. I hope that didn't sound too harsh. But if you're writing for comments there are some priorities out of whack. In my humble opinion.

I can understand why people get mildly annoyed with Pinterest rehashing. But posts like that I just skim or skip altogether. It's nothing to get your panties in a twist about.

As to the real life stuff, I mean who cares?! I'm very transparent on my blog, but I have boundaries. We all have our own comfort levels on what we share.

I get super annoyed with posts on blogging how tos (not ALL the posts, just some. a lot of them are very good) where someone tries to lay down the law on blogging rules (i.e. use THIS many pictures sized like THIS and only THIS many paragraphs or no one will read your post). Just blog however you want and have fun :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Love this! Another thing I've learned about blogging is that different things work for different people. We each have a different writing style. We each have completely different lives, challenges, successes, losses, dreams, goals, etc. Some people just want their blog to be Pinterest pins they love, some want it to be solely fashion posts, some want it to be about their life and whatever comes with it. Blogging is blogging. It's our own little space on the Internet.

I struggled a lot with writing about my last 'relationship.' I could have said hey, it's very private and I don't want people to know about it. But, my PERSONAL opinion was that I knew it was going to be (and still has been) a huge life-changer for me. I've decided to share the way it has all made me feel to go through it while leaving out many of the more personal details, since my intention was never to create a bashing party or negativity. I think we have to follow our hearts. Certain BIG things that happen in our lives, we may choose to write about. The trick if we do decide to share something, is to find the balance. It's okay to open up (if you decide to) and to be honest, doing so has really connected me with other people who went through or are going through similar things. Some people are comfortable with sharing some personal things, others aren't and either way is okay!

Love your blog, girl! You always offer good, true insight and I think we can all appreciate that :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. I agree completely. Why is everyone complaining? Each person can blog how they want to. As long as your not being disrespectful or starting drama who cares? I only have issues with people who don't follow through with what they say (like giveaways) or bloggers who think they're too good to respond to smaller bloggers. I feel like people forget they were there once. Other than that, do what you want and what makes you happy. Great post girl.
